Rabaul and Montevideo Maru Memorial

Commemorating the 75th Anniversary

Rabaul, 22 June 2017

A service will be held at the Montevideo Maru and Rabaul 1942-1945 Memorial. The Australian High Commissioner to PNG, Mr Bruce Davis, has accepted our invitation to attend the event.

The PNGAA Rabaul and Montevideo Maru group together with Susie McGrade and the Rabaul Hotel/Rabaul Historical Society are working to ensure a memorable few days in Rabaul visiting historical and fascinating sites.  Rabaul Hotel has put together a package including accommodation, meals, tours and transfers for five nights.  For more information, click here. Air Niugini has daily flights from Brisbane to Rabaul and return, and three flights weekly from Sydney to Rabaul and return.

Canberra, 1 July 2017

A service will be held at the Australian War Memorial at 1 pm. All welcome—please let your family and friends know. This will be followed by a dinner at the Mercure Canberra, Ainslie and Limestone Avenues, Braddon. The cost of the 3 course meal is $80, and payment will confirm the booking.

Commemorative Service: If you intend to attend this service, please contact Sara Turner events@pngaa.net or Andrea Williams admin@memorial.org.au by 8 June, with the following information:

• The full name of each person who wishes to attend
• The age of each person who wishes to attend (optional but helpful)
• Any mobility issues
• The full postal address, phone numbers (home and mobile) and e-mail of each person who wishes to attend
• The relationship, if any, of the person to the events of 1942 (if the person has not attended a previous event in Canberra)
• The address and phone number where the person will be staying in Canberra
• Any other people travelling in the party

Even if you do not have all this information available now, please tell us what you can.

75th Anniversary Collection Book

We need your stories for publication in 2017!  Stories about the "Lost Battalion", stories about civilians who remained behind and were never seen again, stories about escape, stories about evacuation, stories about those who later returned to New Guinea islands, and stories about how WW2 in the New Guinea islands affected your family and lives during and after WW2.
